    :: Install OpenNap for Windows
    • Windows Opennap Setup •

    These installation steps are for WINDOWS ONLY.
    Warning: This is NOT the most recent available version of Opennap!

    Opennap is a clone of the Napster servers and works much in the same way as the applications which once ran on the Napster Inc. servers.

    Here we go..

    1. Create a folder directly in your C drive and name it "opennap"

    2. Download "0.36 Win32 binary" (246kb) at http://opennap.sourceforge.net (it's on the left side of the screen under 'Downloads' =) --when prompted, choose "save file" and browse to your new c:/opennap folder.
    3. Unzip the file using 'Winzip Classic'. Choose to extract the files and once again, browse to the c:/opennap folder when prmopted to do so.

    4. Go to your opennap folder (there should be about 16 files in there now including the .zip file you got). Double click on "setup.exe".

    5. An ms-dos window will pop up. (if you havn't worked with ms-dos at all, this will look intimidating--but don't worry. this part is one of the quickest steps). The first prompt you recieve will be:
    Enter nickname for server owner (elite?) [no default]:
    --Enter your main screen name. The name which you wish to be at elite level on your server.(you'll have plenty of time to add different ones if you so desire).

    6. After you have entered your screen name (which can have no spaces in it), press ENTER. The next prompt will be:
    Enter nickname for password? [no default]:
    Here, enter the password you wish to have for your screen name. (take this time to write down the screen name and password just in case).

    7. After you've typed your password and hit ENTER, the next prompt will be:
    Enter email address? [email@here.com]:
    Enter your email address here and press ENTER (mine's never recieved a single email=)

    8. The ms-dos window will suddenly close now, and you'll say "OH &%1$!!!" --DON'T WORRY! you're right on track =)

    9. Go back to your c:/opennap folder (which should now have about 21 files in it total). See those files that start with "sample."? Rename the first 4 of those. I've showed the name of the file and what it should be changed to below.
    sample.channels ---> channels
    sample.conf {Don't change this file - you don't need it} sample.motd ---> motd
    sample.servers ---> servers
    Note: don't change the name of "sample.users". That stays as it is.

    10. Next: Download this config file and put it into your opennap folder [++THEN RENAME IT TO 'CONFIG' - - TAKE THAT .TXT OFF THE END++]. Then open it with Notepad (a program which comes with windows automatically). What you see inside are the configuration settings for your server. You must change the following:
    server_name (change to any name you wish (no spaces) with .yi.org at the end) -- example: ghostbusters.yi.org
    lissten_addr (change to your ip (if it is a static ip) -- if you don't know what that means, ask someone (ie me - lol)

    11. The .yi.org server name doesn't have to be permanent though. In fact, you can get an account at another name servervice website if you like. Or even what I'm working on right now: Buying a domain and making that your server name.

    12. OKAY. Now's a good time for a break. Your server's very very close to running... and if you have TekNap, you may already be able to log onto it if you use your IP address (and you added it in the config at the 'listen_addr' part)
    If you want to, you can save the config file and double click on the "opennap.exe" file in your c:/opennnap folder. It'll open an ms dos window and scroll down some stuff that looks confusing. Don't worry about it tho. Just ignore that window until you want to stop the server (in which case you'll hit CTRL + C)

    13. If you have TekNap, and would like to attempt a connect, you can double click on opennap.exe, click on TekNap.exe, and then type into the TekNap text strip at the bottom:
    /server [your ip] 8888 [the elite screenname you gave] [the password you gave] (and then hit ENTER)
    If this doesn't work, however, don't fret.
    OR: You can use the 'Manual Connect' option under the "file" menu on napigator to make your Napster client connect to your server via the IP
